The V3 Viaduct, part of the A4 motorway, also known as the Marão Motorway, was built using the balanced cantilever method to construct its 29-metre-wide deck. Casting the full cross-section in concrete set a Portuguese record at the time, demonstrating the advanced technology employed in the project.

The IP4 main route, which provides access to the Trás-os-Montes region, was known as one of the most dangerous roads in the country, with numerous accidents. The A4 motorway, including the V3 Viaduct and the Marão Tunnel—the longest road tunnel in Portugal, at 5,656 metres—significantly improved safety conditions, enhanced traffic flow and strengthened the region’s territorial cohesion.
