The E40 – Merelbeke project consisted of the construction of two new bridges in one of the busiest roads in Belgium, the purpose of these new bridges is to replace the existing bridges that are over 68 years old.
The new bridges are wider and have more efficient noise barriers, the new decks are equipped with three lanes and wide roads in all directions.
In order to guarantee that the traffic flowed both ways during the works, a provisional bridge was built. In the first phase, the north side of the existing bridges was demolished, and then during the next phase, it was demolished the south side of the existing bridges.
