Description

The Hinkley Point C’s project consists of the construction of two nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations providing low-carbon electricity for around six million homes.

Hinkley Point C when finished will make a major contribution to the United Kingdom’s move to reduce carbon emissions. The electricity generated by its two reactors will offset 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year over its 60-year lifespan.

The works awarded to ConstruGomes are the construction of the high-capacity reinforced concrete structures that will secure and protect large ducts (>3,50m) whose main purpose is to transport seawater for the ancillary cooling system of the nuclear power plant.

ConstruGomes’ main activities on this project commenced with the technical support and the definition of the constructive methodologies for the structural works, to the management, the assemble and the installation of reinforcement, formwork, and concrete cast.

It should be noted that on a project like Hinkley Point C the quality and safety standards are much more strict than in some other more common engineering works due to the peculiarity of this project and the associated risks, with well-defined tolerances, that demanded multidisciplinary highly skilled teams.

Adoption of prefabricated elements whenever feasible
Use of streamform (forced joint) to the detriment of traditional formwork when applicable
Use of mass concrete as reverse formwork
