The Viaducto sobre el arroyo de Ferrería, in Asturias, was a major construction challenge due to the fact that it had to go through de Picos da Europa, a mountainous area of great ecological value. The Asturias is one of the most interesting regions of the Iberian Peninsula. The Principality became the last Christian stronghold og the whole Peninsula, from where it began the reconquest as it still possible to be revived today in mythical places such as Covadonga.
Due to the grographic complexity of the Asturias Principality, and in order to preserve de Bairro de Ferrería it was necessary to build large scale viaducts to connect the French border with Galicia. The Viaducto sobre el arroyo de Ferrería was one of the first to be executed to serve this purpose.
