The Albert Kanal project consists of the reconstruction of a set of several bridges, through their elevation over the waterline, to promote the navigability of the Antwerp – Liège route. These works will allow the passage of larger cargo ships, with the possibility of loading up to four layers of containers (that is 9.1 meters above the waterline).
To raise this set of bridges, higher abutments and steel arched bridges were built, as well as anchored quay walls, ensuring a greater height concerning the waterline and width for the canal. These works were also accompanied by dredging that allowed to deepen the navigation canal.
