The peculiar name that this bridge has been given is due to an existing stream in the area. The name "Despe-te que suas" roughly translates as "Take your clothes off because you are going to sweat". This name had been given to the stream due to the pronounced landscape that surrounds it, when crossing this landscape on foot the locals would struggle hence the name.
The Viaduto Despe-te que suas is the highest on Azores and the biggest of all the 27 viaducts that compmose the highway. The highway is an alternative to the region's roads that have been in a poor condition for decades untimately restricting the economic progress for the region.
