The creation of the new viaduct not only improved transport links but it also made it possible for the old viaduct to be transformed into a solely pedestrian walkway. This pedestrian walkway was a structure that the local population had been requesting for some time.
Spain has been heavily investing in the high-speed train lines. Viaducto de San Benito is a part of the Atlantic Axis high-speed rail that connects A Coruña and Vigo. As a result it is possible to travel from one city to another in just under one hour when it used to take over 2 hours. The entire construction process was specially designed to support the AVE Spanish high-speed train.
